Flying high with STEM

A group of our young people recently had the exciting opportunity to take part in a brilliant STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths) session at Edinburgh Airport’s Community Engagement Centre!

The group were welcomed by airport staff and introduced to the many ways that science, technology, engineering and maths play a part in keeping the airport running smoothly every single day. From air traffic control to engineering the young people were encouraged to imagine how STEM skills open doors to fascinating careers.

Taking on the challenges

The young people threw themselves into two hands-on challenges with great enthusiasm. The first was to design and build a chair using only balloons and sticky tape which had to be sturdy enough to hold a person for a full 60 seconds without their feet touching the floor! There was lots of problem solving and laughter as the group discovered that balloons need just the right amount of bounce to avoid popping, yet still providing enough strength.

The second activity tested brainpower with some clever code breaking. Using Caesar’s cipher wheels the young people cracked airport-themed codes which then guided them to build Lego creations linked to their discoveries. They particularly enjoyed this challenge which really gave them a chance to showcase their creativity and teamwork.

Encouraging journeys

The session ended with a short presentation about the wide range of careers at the airport that rely on these kind of skills. This was a wonderful chance for our young people to see how what they learn in school could connect to exciting opportunities in the future, and for sparking curiosity and inspiration among our young learners.

A huge thank you to the Edinburgh Airport team for hosting us, for sharing your time and expertise, and for sparking curiosity and inspiration among our young learners.
