DYW Day 2025 at Harmeny

This year’s Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) Day at Harmeny was another fantastic opportunity to ignite our children’s imaginations and introduce them to a wide variety of career paths through hands-on learning, engaging demonstrations, and real-world experiences.

Throughout the day, our successful learners took part in interactive workshops and met professionals from diverse industries, including construction, digital technology, healthcare, and horticulture. Each session was thoughtfully designed to spark curiosity and expand their understanding of the possibilities that lie ahead.

Inspiring futures through hands-on learning

One of the highlights of the day was a session with our outdoor education team who recreated a realistic ambulance rescue scenario. The children were introduced to basic first aid and participated in a simulated emergency response using our vans, which were transformed into ambulances for the day. Equipped with “rescue gear,” the children practiced staying calm under pressure and working as a team—skills that are just as important in life as they are in any profession.

Another standout session involved our gardening team, where children learned how to repair and repurpose tools and equipment for use in garden spaces. This hands-on activity not only encouraged practical DIY skills but also fostered a strong sense of responsibility and pride in caring for and enhancing their environment. We’re proud to support the development of such valuable life skills that will serve them well into adulthood.

From traditional professions to new technologies

Edinburgh College provided a roofing and tiling workshop, professions that have been developed over centuries to meet the needs of our construction industry.

Another important group of professions are those related to healthcare. To explore these, representatives from NHS Careers visited to explain the wide range of career paths available in the healthcare sector and how to pursue them, while also answering our pupils’ questions. By the end of the workshop, some young people were left reflecting on the possibility that they might one day choose a career in this field.

New technologies were tried thanks to Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), who delivered an exciting workshop on artificial intelligence. The children explored how AI can be used to invent, innovate, and improve the world around us by designing their own AI helper. From smart technology to future-forward thinking, the session sparked a genuine excitement about the role they could play in shaping tomorrow’s technology.

“It’s wonderful to see how engaged they are—especially during workshops that involve hands-on activities and creativity.

A celebration of possibilities

Once again, the day was a true celebration of learning, imagination, and personal growth. Through meaningful experiences like these, our children and young people develop skills, attitudes, and enthusiasm for learning that will empower them throughout life and become confidents individuals.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the professionals and organisations who generously gave their time and energy to help inspire our young people. Events like DYW Day are vital in helping our children explore new possibilities—and we can’t wait to see where their journeys will lead next.
