At Harmeny we believe that reading is more than just a skill: it’s a doorway to imagination, learning and emotional growth. That’s why this year we’ve introduced our three special library boxes in some of the favourite outdoor play areas around our estate.
This initiative is rooted in our commitment to creating literacy-rich environments—spaces and experiences that inspire curiosity, spark conversations and nurture early literacy skills. Our approach draws on professional learning around designing environments where children have consistent, purposeful exposure to language, storytelling and reading.
The three library boxes are located in our Community Garden, adventure playground and on our front lawn. One box is dedicated entirely to comics, offering a fun, visual way to spark interest and enjoyment in reading. While the other two contain a rich variety of books across genres and reading levels, thoughtfully chosen to engage every child and young person supporting their diverse interests and experiences.
Built by our community, decorated by our children
Crafted by our maintenance team with the help of volunteers, the boxes were then decorated and full by primary-aged pupils and teachers as part of their class projects. Each brushstroke and detail reflect pride, creativity and a sense of community.
Our comic library box was also given a great boost thanks to a generous donation of brand-new Bunny vs Monkey and Looshkin books from the publishing company of Jamie Smart!
Where play meets peace
We understand the powerful role that reading plays not only in academic development but also in emotional well-being. Through quiet moments of reading children can relax, explore new ideas and find comfort in stories. This balance between play and calm reflection helps nurture a holistic learning environment.
However, reading does not have to be a solitary activity and our library boxes have already been bringing our children together. One sunny day a child, encouraged to step away from his gaming, found himself unsure of what to do. Drawn to the comic box and guided to a book featuring a cat,—his favourite animal, —he took a cushion and settled under the shade of a tree. Soon, another child noticed, fetched her own book and lay beside him. Two children, side by side, lost in their own worlds, shaded by branches and wrapped in the quiet joy of reading—it was a scene to treasure.
The magic of reading
Our library boxes are one more way of making reading fun, accessible and part of daily life. Just like the community book exchanges found in towns and cities, they invite children to swap, share and discover stories in an informal, joyful way. By placing books beyond the usual settings of classrooms or living rooms and into gardens, play areas and outdoor corners of our estate, we are giving children the chance to encounter stories where they least expect them.
In doing so, we not only nurture a love for reading but also gently encourage time outdoors, helping children find magic not just in books, but in the world around them.
